BOSTON, MA- The Red Sox Foundation, in partnership with the MassMutual Foundation and Fenway Park Tours, today debuted the Fenway Park Learning Lab, an immersive, educational tour for sixth grade Boston Public Schools (BPS) students. The program, co-designed with BPS educators, leverages Fenway Park as a teaching tool bringing classroom curriculum to life in areas including statistics, history, science, and financial literacy. The six-stop educational experience features visits to Fenway Farms to learn about botanical science, the Green Monster to estimate distance and angles, and concession stands to learn financial literacy and budgeting. This morning’s inaugural Fenway Park Learning Lab tour was attended by sixth grade students from the Nathan Hale Middle School in Roxbury.

“The Fenway Park Learning Lab provides students with an exciting opportunity to learn through exploration of their storied ballpark in a way that complements their classroom curriculum,” said Red Sox Partner and Red Sox Foundation Board Member Linda Henry. “Inspired by my husband John’s love of baseball and math, this dynamic program activates Fenway Park as a place that will help foster the next generation of scientists, innovators, and, of course, baseball fans. This program would not have been possible without the support of the MassMutual Foundation, and we are thankful to them for helping us make our historic ballpark part of the educational journey for Boston Public Schools students.”

The Fenway Park Learning Lab tour is 60 minutes long with stops in the Grandstand seats, the Green Monster, Fenway Farms, the Red Sox Hall of Fame, Press Box, and the Kids Concourse. The curriculum is designed to meet state and national education standards and the program is estimated to reach 1,000 BPS sixth graders during its inaugural year with plans to expand the opportunity to all BPS sixth graders. Curriculum-specific materials are provided to teachers and students including backpacks equipped with an activity workbook, binoculars, stickers, eye black, calculators, and baseball cards. Each student also will receive a biodegradable bookmark that can be planted in soil to grow wildflowers.
