Quisenberry misses out in Hall of Fame voting

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Former Royals closer Dan Quisenberry came up short in the Hall of Fame voting by the 16-member Expansion Era committee.

While managers Bobby Cox, Tony La Russa and Joe Torre were unanimously selected, Monday's announcement put Quisenberry among the nine other candidates who received six or fewer votes with 12 needed for election.

The others nominated, but not elected, were Davey Concepcion, Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Billy Martin, Marvin Miller, Dave Parker, Ted Simmons and George Steinbrenner. So Quiz was in good company.

The submarine-style Quisenberry had 244 saves in his 12-year Major League career, 10 of them with Kansas City. He finished in the top five in the American League Cy Young Award voting five times, made three All-Star teams and led the AL in saves in five seasons. He was on the Royals' only two World Series teams in 1980 and '85.

Quisenberry died of cancer on Sept. 30, 1998.
