Royals go with pitcher/catcher college star

KANSAS CITY -- Like Hope Carter -- the Royals' first Draft pick on Friday -- Zane Evans also plays two positions.

Evans -- selected No. 114 overall in the fourth round on Friday -- began his career at Georgia Tech solely as a catcher, but he began relieving last year as well. Like Matt Wieters, Evans, a right-handed pitcher, served as the Yellow Jackets' starting catcher and closer, performing well in both roles.

Evans is a solid catcher, but some defensive concerns may push him to the mound. His pitching duties have decreased this year, but he has continued to show plenty of potential. Scouts like his fastball-slider combination and his projectability as a pitcher.

Evans is still learning how to pitch, but his fastball routinely reaches 90 mph even after catching several innings.
