New fundraising plates feature Old English D

Tigers partner with Michigan Secretary of State office for great cause

April 16th, 2019

DETROIT -- Tigers fans have proudly displayed the Old English D for years -- on hats, jerseys and T-shirts; jackets, car flags and bumper stickers. Now, they can get it on their license plate.

The State of Michigan is teaming up with Detroit’s four major professional sports teams, including the Tigers and Red Wings, to create fundraising license plates. Tigers license plates are available now on the Michigan Secretary of State website, as well as Secretary of State branch offices across Michigan. Fans can purchase the plates regardless of whether their current plates and registration are up for renewal.

Similar to other fundraising plates in Michigan, the Tigers license plate costs $35. Of that cost, $25 will go to the Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities. The mission of the foundation is to enhance lives through the game of baseball with a focus on youth, education and recreation. From ticket donations and field renovation projects to youth baseball programs and college scholarships, the foundation aids in the development and funding of innovative programs that reach Tigers fans with positive messages and promote the good citizenship embodied in the storied history of the Detroit Tigers.

“We’re very excited to partner with the Michigan Secretary of State office to produce State of Michigan Fundraising License Plates for the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers,” said Chris Granger, the group president of sports and entertainment for Ilitch Holdings, Inc. “It’s a great cause with proceeds benefiting the Detroit Red Wings Foundation. We look forward to our fans proudly displaying the Winged Wheel and the Old English D across metro Detroit and the great state of Michigan.”
