Tigers claim ex-Twins RHP to boost bullpen

NEW YORK -- In need of bullpen help, the Tigers made a series of moves to shuffle around their relief options. Before Detroit’s 4-3 loss to the Mets on Sunday, the Tigers optioned left-hander to Triple-A Toledo and recalled left-hander from Toledo. After the game, they claimed righty off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and optioned Hall, who did not appear in Sunday’s game.

Hall has been a starter and reliever for the Mudhens this season and had a 6.70 ERA, but he ranked sixth in the International League in strikeouts with 50. The Tigers’ bullpen has been taxed the last few games, and relievers Buck Farmer, Joe Jimenez and Blaine Hardy were not available for Sunday’s game.

went seven innings in the loss to save the relievers from being overworked again.

“[Hall] has a big curveball and has deception,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “He is not overpowering by any means. He is mid-80s to maybe 90 miles an hour at best. He can shoot a slider out of there, too.”

Adams is expected to join the Tigers on Monday when they face the Orioles to begin a three-game series. The right-hander appeared in just two games for Minnesota this season and allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings.

“[Adams] is a hard thrower, upper 90s. He will be on our roster for tomorrow’s game,” Gardenhire said.
