White Sox center fielder was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday with a right oblique strain after being removed from Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Tigers following the fourth inning.

“Looked like it was that oblique area,” Chicago manager Tony La Russa said on Saturday. “All indications are that he tweaked it, and [I'm] not optimistic that he would be available [Sunday]..”

Outfielder Adam Engel was reinstated from the 10-day injured list.

Hamilton was at the plate with one out and a man on second in the bottom of the fourth against Tarik Skubal. Hamilton was noticeably uncomfortable after a few swings in the at-bat, grabbing his side and wincing in pain. Team trainers went out to check on him. Hamilton finished the plate appearance, which ended on a foul-tip strikeout.

But after the frame, La Russa made the decision to remove Hamilton, replacing him in the order with while moved from right field to center.

Hamilton is hitting .217 with a .672 OPS and 10 RBIs this season.

“It is sad to see Billy go down,” said second baseman , who had two hits and drove in a run on Saturday. “He loves to be out there. He's a huge presence to our team, but once that happened, the very next inning, we were locked in right on the game and hoping to pull that one out.”
