Into the 🌽! Abreu hits first HR in Iowa

August 13th, 2021

DYERSVILLE, Iowa -- made history twice Thursday night during the White Sox 9-8 win over the Yankees in the Field of Dreams Game.

Abreu’s home run to left in the first inning became the first home run in Iowa in AL/NL history when he connected on an 0-2 pitch from Yankees starter Andrew Heaney and launched a line drive into the corn. The 23rd home run of the season for Abreu also became the 221st of his career, tying him for third all time in franchise history with Hall of Famer Harold Baines.

Third place probably will be as high as Abreu goes, with one year left on his contract after this season. Frank Thomas sits No. 1 at 448 and Paul Konerko ranks No. 2 at 432. Both were in attendance Thursday night. Abreu also drew two walks, giving him 41 for the season and putting him just 11 away from a new single-season high (he had 51 walks as a rookie in ’14).
