CHICAGO -- Noah Schultz left Friday’s series opener against the Guardians with one out in the first inning, and the departure was not due to injury.
It also had nothing to do with Schultz allowing two runs and having runners on first and third with one out. Manager Will Venable made a visit to the mound to talk to Schultz after Angel Martínez’s two-run single, but White Sox pitching coach Derek Bove already had visited Schultz in the rough opening frame.
Under official rule 5.10(l), “a manager or coach is allowed only one visit to the mound per pitcher in a single inning without penalty. If the same coach or manager makes a second visit to the same pitcher in the same inning, the pitcher must be removed from the pitching position.” Although nobody was warming up when Venable initially walked to the mound, a couple of umpires’ meetings allowed David Sandlin time to get ready before they decided Schultz had to depart.
Sandlin, who joined the White Sox Friday from Triple-A Charlotte, pitched out of further first-inning trouble, striking out Rhys Hoskins and getting Brayan Rocchio on a groundout. The White Sox used eight hurlers during a 13-inning, 12-11 loss to Boston on Thursday night.
