MIAMI -- Even after right-hander Davis Martin, who is scheduled to close out the White Sox opening home series against the reigning American League champion Blue Jays, pleaded to the skies in Miami to hold off the rain on Thursday night, the Chicago sky was too far away to listen.
The White Sox home opener at Rate Field, which was slated for Thursday afternoon, was postponed until Friday due to a forecast of inclement weather. Fans will have to get one more night's sleep, with first pitch set for 1:10 p.m. CT.
The pitching matchups will remain as scheduled, with White Sox right-hander Sean Burke set to face Dylan Cease, who will go up against his former team, in Game 1. Anthony Kay is slated to pitch opposite Toronto left-hander Eric Lauer in the second game of the series. Toronto’s starter for Sunday has yet to be announced.
White Sox manager Will Venable said the postponement was a “good thing,” as Chicago returns from a six-game road trip to open the season, during which it earned just one win against Miami after being swept by Milwaukee in its opening series.
“As poorly as it went, these guys have been working extremely hard. It’s one of those [times] where I think we can use the day to recharge, reset and be ready to go on Friday,” Venable said following Wednesday’s 10-0 loss to the Marlins at loanDepot park.
Rate Field parking lots will open at 10 a.m., with gates opening at 11:10 on Friday.
Chicago Sports Network and ESPN Chicago Radio AM-1000/FM-100.3 HD2 will broadcast the White Sox home opener.
All tickets for Thursday’s postponed contest, including prepaid parking passes, Stadium Club passes, Ballpark Pass tickets and patio tickets, are valid for admission to Friday’s rescheduled game at Rate Field. No exchanges are necessary.
