CHICAGO -- White Sox second baseman Yoan Moncada left Saturday's 5-0 loss to the Royals in the fifth inning after Reynaldo Lopez's would-be pickoff attempt of Paulo Orlando hit Moncada on the inside of his right knee.
Replays showed Moncada reacting in pain almost immediately before he fell to the ground.
"It felt like a hammer hitting on my knee," Moncada said through interpreter Billy Russo. "It was really painful."
"It hit him in kind of the equivalent of the funny bone in the elbow," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "It gives you a little zinger, and it takes a little while to dissipate."
Moncada was helped off the field by bench coach Joe McEwing and head athletic trainer Herm Schneider. X-rays were negative and Moncada was listed as day to day. He had a single and a walk prior to exiting, giving him four walks in two games, and ended a stretch of 19 straight games with at least one strikeout.
The hope is for Moncada to play Sunday, before getting four days off for the All-Star break.
"I'm going to work out in the morning. I'm going to run. Depending on how I feel is when I will make a decision," Moncada said. "I just feel a little sore. It's nothing serious. I hope to play tomorrow."
