CHICAGO -- Yoán Moncada exited Tuesday’s series-opening 5-2 loss to the Mets in the second inning with a tight right hamstring. Ryan Goins replaced him at third base to start the top of the frame.

Goins was set to pinch-hit for Moncada in the bottom of the first, but José Abreu struck out against Noah Syndergaard to end the inning. Manager Rick Renteria said following the game that Moncada dealt with some tightness during the day, received treatment and said he was ready to go.

“He's day to day. We'll check him out in the morning to see if there's anything else going on,” Renteria said. “That one play right there, coming in on the ground ball, it just tightened up. There was no need for us to keep him in there.

“There wasn't any signs of anything going on before we had the off-day [on Monday]. He should be OK.”

Moncada completed the one play referred to by Renteria, fielding a Wilson Ramos grounder and throwing to first to record the out before walking off gingerly. The television broadcast showed Renteria and Moncada talking in the dugout afterward.

“You hate to see that happen,” said shortstop Tim Anderson, who returned from the injured list on Tuesday. “I'm sure he's going to be all right and we'll get him back in a couple of days, hopefully. And hopefully he'll keep getting his treatment and continue to feel better.”
