January 25th, 2024

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a multiyear deal with John Schriffen to serve as the club’s new television play-by-play broadcaster.

Schriffen, 39, will call White Sox games on NBC Sports Chicago throughout the 2024 season alongside award-winning analyst Steve Stone. Schriffen currently calls Major League Baseball (MLB) games, NCAA basketball, football, softball and baseball contests, the NBA G-League and Summer League for ESPN. He joined the network in 2020 to call the coverage of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO). Beginning in 2022, ESPN tapped him to join the broadcast team for select Saturday and Sunday matchups for ESPN Radio’s MLB national broadcasts.

“I grew up playing and loving the game of baseball, so it is an ultimate dream to have accepted the role as play-by-play voice of the Chicago White Sox,” said Schriffen. “When you consider all the great and talented broadcasters who have worked White Sox games over the decades, being handed this responsibility truly is humbling.

“My new partner, Steve Stone, ranks among those greats, and I am looking forward to our calling Sox games together this season as I get to know White Sox fans and they get to know me. I can’t wait to get started.”

“John is an incredibly talented sports broadcaster who brings energy, combined with national experience, to the booth,” said Brooks Boyer, White Sox chief revenue and marketing officer. “The White Sox have always been committed to setting the standard for local baseball telecasts, delivering professional, engaging and entertaining broadcasts for all viewers. John and Steve Stone, along with our best-in-class production team at NBC Sports Chicago, will undoubtedly carry on the legacy and tradition of the great White Sox teams in the booth.”

“John is a proven broadcasting talent who has earned this coveted opportunity,” said Kevin Cross, president/general manager of NBCUniversal Local Chicago. “We look forward to having John join Steve in the White Sox broadcast booth beginning this season.”

Schriffen, who is biracial, becomes the second Black television play-by-play announcer in MLB, joining Seattle’s Dave Sims. Schriffen’s grandfather, Alphonso Deal, was president of the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP.

Prior to joining ESPN, Schriffen served as a studio host and anchor for the NFL Network, including on NFL Total Access and NFL Gameday Live, and as a play-by-play broadcaster and sideline reporter for CBS Sports. During his tenure at CBS from 2015-2020, he contributed to the NFL on CBS, live coverage of NCAA March Madness, and called men’s and women’s college basketball and college football games.

Schriffen worked as a New York-based correspondent for ABC News from 2012-14, contributing reports for Good Morning America and Nightline. He joined ABC News following a stint at NBC4 in Washington, D.C.

Schriffen began his broadcasting career as a reporter and anchor for News 12 The Bronx in New York City. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Schriffen pitched for the baseball team and served as one of the lead broadcasters for the school’s radio network.
