PITTSBURGH – Prior to today’s series opener at Pittsburgh, the Chicago White Sox designated right-handed pitcher José Ruiz for assignment and selected the contract of right-hander Jesse Scholtens from Class AAA Charlotte.

Scholtens, 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, allowed four runs on three hits with three strikeouts in his only start with Charlotte on April 1 vs. Memphis. Scholtens, who has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 62, was a non-roster invitee to spring training after signing with the White Sox as a minor-league free agent on December 20, 2022. He spent the entire 2022 season with Class AAA El Paso in the San Diego organization, going 4-4 with a 4.10 ERA (38 ER/83.1 IP) and 92 strikeouts in 37 appearances (15 starts).

Scholtens is 27-39 with 4.29 ERA (302 ER/633.1 IP), 182 walks and 608 strikeouts over 154 career games (105 starts) in the San Diego (2016-19, ’21-22) and Chicago (2023) systems. He originally was selected by the Padres in the ninth round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Wright State University.

Ruiz allowed nine runs on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts over four relief appearances (3.2 IP) this season, his sixth with Chicago.

Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
