HOUSTON -- Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, who’s been out of action since straining a quadriceps muscle while running the bases June 16, could be activated prior to Tuesday’s game against the Rockies.

Bregman drove to Houston early Sunday morning after playing two consecutive full games Friday and Saturday for Triple-A Sugar Land at Round Rock during his Minor League rehab assignment. He went 1-for-5 with a double, a walk and an RBI in Sugar Land’s win on Saturday.

Bregman, who also dealt with a hamstring issue while on rehab, was expected to check in at Minute Maid Park on Sunday and talk to manager Dusty Baker and, presumably, team trainers. The Astros have an off-day on Monday before opening a two-game series against Colorado on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park.

“We’ll talk to him and see what kind of progress he’s making and see how he feels physically and mentally about when we might activate him,” Baker said. “First, we’ve got to talk to him.”

Bregman was hitting .275/.359/.428 with seven homers and 34 RBIs in 59 games when he was injured June 16. Abraham Toro filled in at third base before he was traded to the Mariners two weeks ago, and Aledmys Díaz has since played mostly at the position, though his strength is coming off the bench and being able to play four different positions.

When asked if Bregman would be activated Tuesday if healthy, Baker said: “Like I said, we’ve got to talk to him. We’ll see. We’ll need him, but you don’t want to rush because then you’ll send him backwards. He’s chomping at the bit. He’s not real patient. This has been a tough stretch, a real tough stretch. I’m sure he feels guilty about being there and not being there to help the team, especially after we came through all that mess in L.A. [hostile crowd last week]. He’s a guy with the broad shoulders who probably can take the stuff the best. Just like he did in New York [in May at Yankee Stadium].”
