Houston BBWAA recognizes Altuve, Devenski, McHugh

HOUSTON -- All-Star second baseman , rookie pitcher and right-hander were the Astros honored Thursday by the Houston chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Altuve was named the team's Most Valuable Player for the third time in four years after winning his second American League batting title (.338) and leading the league in hits (216). He also was second in the AL in steals (30), tied for third in doubles (42) and was fifth in OPS (.928).
Devenski was named the team's Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year after his breakout season in the bullpen. Devenski, who didn't make the Opening Day roster, posted a 2.16 ERA in 48 appearances (five starts) and set team rookie reliever records in ERA (1.61) and WHIP (0.92).
McHugh was named the winner of the Darryl Kile Award, which is presented to the player chosen as the most affable with teammates, fans and the media. McHugh was 13-10 with a 4.34 ERA in 2016, once again finishing strong with a 4-0 record and 2.45 ERA in his last six starts.
Arizona's was named the Houston Area Player of the Year (non-Astro) after batting.297 with 24 homers, 95 RBIs and a National League-leading 110 walks. Goldschmidt played high school baseball at The Woodlands and in college for Texas State.
Mike Lutz, who covered the Astros for many years with The Associated Press, was named the winner of the Fred Hartman Long and Meritorious Service to Baseball Award.
