A dazzling catch, followed by a damaging inning

Reddick's flying fourth-inning grab quickly undone by Peacock's struggles

MINNEAPOLIS -- A terrific diving catch in right-center field by to rob of extra bases to start the fourth inning appeared, at the time, to be a huge out for Astros pitcher , who raised his hands in the air in jubilation.

Peacock’s mood would quickly turn sour as the next six Twins batters reached base in a dizzying flurry of high exit velocity line drives and runners crossing home plate that had the Astros’ starter headed to the shower before the inning was over.

The Twins rocked Peacock for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings, including six runs in the fourth inning to beat the Astros, 8-2, on Thursday afternoon at Target Field. Minnesota took three of four games from Houston, winning the season series, 4-3.

“They put up really good at-bats and hit them hard,” Astros manager AJ Hinch said. “It looked like he made some mistakes, and they capitalized on it and they put up good at-bat after good at-bat after good at-bat. That’s something we normally do, but they’re a good-hitting club and put up a big inning.”

Peacock (2-2) looked sharp through three innings, save for the second homer he’s allowed this year by former batterymate . Castro’s leadoff homer in the third tied the game after Astros third baseman homered off Twins starter in the first.

“Man, against a good team like this, you’ve got to make pitches,” Peacock said. “I didn’t really make any good pitches that inning. It all happened so fast, and I’ll just keep working and figuring this thing out.”

After the Reddick catch, Peacock walked before Minnesota teed off. A 106.3-mph single by , a 99.7-mph single by , a 107.6-mph double by Castro and a 106-mph triple by came all in a row. Back-to-back doubles by and (115.5 mph exit velocity) chased Peacock from the game after 67 pitches.

“He was trying to make his pitches and they hit some balls hard,” Hinch said. “The inning keeps going, and then the fly ball off the wall by Polanco and Cruz comes up … They’re getting extra-base hits, they hit the ball out of the ballpark and pretty much had their way.”

Peacock said it was difficult to make any adjustments on the fly because the inning was moving so briskly.

“I felt pretty good today,” Peacock said. “I’m not going to lie. That’s a great team over there and they took some good swings, and you’ve got to give it to them.”

The Astros, who were outhit for only the sixth time this season, went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and managed only a sacrifice fly by after loading the bases with no outs in the seventh inning. Houston was 7-for-37 (.206) with runners in scoring position in the series and is hitting .230 on the season with men on second or third.

“We didn’t hit the ball on the line,” Hinch said. “Certainly the ball in the air is your friend when you hit the ball out of the ballpark. When you get pitches to hit and you can put the ball in the air, all the better. It was a little notable today that 15 outs were popups or soft contact fly balls.”
