Jack-of-all-trades Dubón nabs second utility Gold Glove

November 3rd, 2025

HOUSTON -- The only Astros player to start at seven positions in consecutive seasons, utility man has become the seventh Houston player to win multiple American League Gold Glove Awards.

Dubón was named the winner of his second Gold Glove at the utility position in the AL on Sunday, beating finalists Ernie Clement of the Blue Jays and Daniel Schneemann of the Guardians. Dubón won the utility Gold Glove Award in 2023 and was a finalist at the position last season.

He joins third baseman Doug Rader (1970-74), outfielder Cesar Cedeno (1972-76), second baseman Craig Biggio (1994-97), catcher Brad Ausmus (2001-02, ‘06), outfielder Michael Bourn (2009-10) and pitcher Dallas Keuchel (2014-16, ‘18) as the only Houston players to win multiple Gold Gloves. He’s the only Astros position player to do it in the AL.

Dubón combined his 104 starts for the 2025 Astros at second base (37), shortstop (24), third base (15), left field (15), center field (10), right field (two) and first base (one), making him a versatile player on a team that battled injuries at several key positions. The only positions he didn’t play were catcher and pitcher.

The results were stellar across the board: 14 Defensive Runs Saved and +17 Fielding Run Value, (tied for sixth most in MLB). He ranked in the 99th percentile in Outs Above Average with 20, which also ranked third in the AL, behind only Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. (24) and Boston center fielder Rafaela Ceddanne (21).

To determine the winners at the nine standard positions, the 30 MLB managers and up to six coaches from each team vote from a pool of players in their league, excluding players from their own team. These votes comprise 75% of the selection total, with the SABR Defensive Index counting for the other 25%.

For the utility position, Rawlings collaborated with SABR to create a specialized defensive formula separate from the traditional selection process.

Dubón, whom the Astros acquired from the Giants in a trade for Minor League catcher Michael Papierski in May 2022, became a key member of the Astros and helped them win the World Series in ’22. In ’23, he started games at five defensive positions and was a Gold Glove finalist at second base, where he began the season as a starter for the injured Jose Altuve, and for the utility spot.
