Fore! Top South Side prospect Braden Montgomery golfs two long balls at Double-A

April 12th, 2026

Braden Montgomery teed off Sunday.

MLB's No. 33 prospect put together his best nine innings so far this season, swatting two homers in Double-A Birmingham's 12-4 loss to Chattanooga at Regions Field. Montgomery has had only one other multihomer game as a pro, for High-A Winston-Salem on May 6, 2025.

In the opening frame of the series finale Sunday, Montgomery went back-to-back with outfield mate Samuel Zavala on consecutive pitches, sending his second long ball of the season to center field. The solo shots were surrendered by Reds right-hander Johnathan Harmon, who didn't allow another hit across the rest of his five-inning outing.

The top White Sox prospect also walked but went without another hit until the eighth, when the left-handed hitter found the green in center off righty Thomas Farr. Montgomery clubbed his first roundtripper of the campaign in the season opener on April 3.

Chicago acquired the 6-foot-2, 220-pound outfielder in the Garrett Crochet trade with the Red Sox. Montgomery, who suffered a right fractured foot in his junior season with the Aggies, never played a game in Boston's system after being selected 12th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft.

In his first professional season, he slashed .270/.360/.444 with 12 homers, 34 doubles, 68 RBIs and 64 runs scored across three levels. Montgomery finished his debut campaign at Double-A, playing in 34 games for the Barons before being invited to big league camp in his second Spring Training.

"He has really high expectations of where he's going to be and we want to push him but making sure he hits each level and he dominates that level," White Sox director of hitting Ryan Fuller told MLB.com in February. "So wherever he starts, we want to make sure he’s absolutely ready for the next step. … All these guys, the goal is when you get to Chicago, you stay in Chicago and you help win championships."

The White Sox are expected to promote their second-ranked prospect Noah Schultz (MLB No. 46) for his Major League debut Tuesday. In the meantime, Montgomery will continue his pursuit of joining his fellow Top 100 prospect on the South Side in the near future.
