Brewers being cautious with Hiura (quad)

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers’ medical team will re-evaluate rookie on Tuesday afternoon after the infielder was limited to pinch-hitting duty in Monday’s 6-5 loss to the Reds because of tightness in his left quadriceps.

Hiura tweaked the muscle in Sunday’s series finale at Arizona, but was originally slated to start Monday at Miller Park on the same day he became the first Brewers rookie ever to win the National League Player of the Week Award presented by W.B. Mason.

That changed after batting practice. Hiura was scratched from the lineup in favor of , who hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning after Hiura appeared as a pinch-hitter, took a four-pitch walk, and was replaced by pinch-running pitcher Zach Davies.

The decision to play it safe, Hiura said, was tied to outfielder ’s absence to attend the funeral of Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs in California. The Brewers didn’t want to risk Hiura’s early exit given its short bench.

“It wasn’t anything too serious,” Hiura said. “We just don’t want to push it, in case I hurt it more. But I was available for a pinch-hit appearance, and if need be, put me in the game. I’m not too concerned about it. Today was just a precautionary thing.”
