BOSTON – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the following roster moves:
- Lazaro Montes (#99), OF, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
- Hoby Milner (#41), LHP, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
- Connor Joe, INF/OF, designated for assignment.
- Nolan Kingham, RHP, designated for assignment.
The Mariners 40-man roster remains full at 40 players and Seattle’s 28-man active roster is now at 28 players.
Montes (pronounced mone-tess), 21, will make his Major League debut when he first appears in a game. Lazaro (pronounced lah-sah-ro) is batting .249 (113x453) with 99 runs, 24 doubles, 1 triple, 38 home runs, 96 RBI and 8 stolen bases, getting on base at a .369 clip while slugging .558 for an .928 OPS in 123 games between Double-A Arkansas (79 G) and Triple-A Tacoma (44 G). In 25 August games with the Rainiers, he hit .292 (28x96) with 21 runs, 5 doubles, 10 home runs, 22 RBI and an 1.054 OPS.
Among all minor league players this season, he ranks among the leaders second in home runs and 12th in RBI.
The 6-foot-5, 210-pound outfielder is ranked as the No. 56 overall prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline and the No. 57 prospect by Baseball America. He is ranked as the No. 5 and No. 3 prospect in the Mariners organization by each publication, respectively.
Montes would be the 13th Mariners player to make their MLB debut at Fenway Park and the first since Sauryn Lao on April 22, 2025. He would also be the first Mariners position player to make their MLB debut at Fenway since Shed Long Jr. on May 11, 2019 and the 5th overall. Additionally, Montes would become the 10th player 21-or-younger to appear in an MLB game this year and the second Mariners player, joining INF Colt Emerson.
The Havana, Cuba native was originally signed by the Mariners as an International Free Agent on January 15, 2022. He has appeared in parts of 5 minor league seasons, batting .267 (483x1,808) with 349 runs, 96 doubles, 17 triples, 114 home runs, 392 RBI and 25 stolen bases with a .387 OBP, slugging .528 for an .915 OPS in 497 games. The majority of his defensive appearances have come in right field (418 G), while he has also appeared in left field (4 G) and designated hitter (8 G).
Milner, 35, has appeared in 38 Major League games this season with the Chicago Cubs, going 1-0 with a 3.53 (14 ER, 35.2 IP), 9 walks, 18 strikeouts and a 1.21 WHIP. Hoby (pronounced HO-bee) was designated for assignment on August 29 and released by the Cubs on August 30. He signed a minor league contract with the Mariners on August 31.
Milner has appeared in parts of 10 Major League seasons with the Phillies (2017-18), Rays (2018-19), Angels (2020), Brewers (2021-24), Rangers (2025) and Cubs (2026). He has appeared in 405 career games (1 start), going 14-9 with 2 saves, a 3.80 ERA (159 ER, 377.0 IP), 103 walks, 339 strikeouts and a 1.23 WHIP.
He was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 44th round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Robert L. Paschal High School (Fort Worth, TX), but did not sign. He was again selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 7th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Texas (Austin, TX).
Joe, 33, appeared in 21 games for Seattle this season, batting .179 (7x39) with 2 runs, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 3 RBI, 2 stolen bases and 6 walks. In 73 games with Tacoma this season, he hit .264 (71x269) with 50 runs, 18 doubles, 8 home runs, 35 RBI and a .785 OPS.
Joe was originally selected as the 39th overall pick in the 2014 MLB First Player Draft. He’s appeared in parts of 7 seasons in the Majors with San Francisco (2019), Colorado (2021-22), Pittsburgh (2023-24), Cincinnati (2025), San Diego (2025) and Seattle (2026).
Kingham, 29, was claimed off waivers from the Texas Rangers on August 10. He made his MLB debut on August 3 vs. San Francisco with the Rangers, allowing 1 run over 1.0 inning. Since he was claimed by Seattle, he has made 3 starts for Triple-A Tacoma, holding a 4.30 ERA (7 ER, 14.2 IP).
The Las Vegas, Nevada native has also appeared in 11 games (10 starts) with Triple-A Round Rock and 6 games (6 starts) with Monterrey in the Mexican League this season. Over 6 minor league seasons in the Braves (2018-23) and Rangers (2026) systems, he is 26-36 with 3 saves, a 4.56 ERA (260 ER, 513.1 IP), 138 walks and 377 strikeouts in 127 games (88 starts). He was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 39th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft but did not sign, and selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 12th round of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
