Forever Nuggets: Phillies pitchers who could rake

With the addition of the designated hitter in the National League in 2022, pitchers no longer stepped into a batter’s box. For more than a century, Phillies pitchers got to bat. A few could hit, most couldn’t.

While limited, pitchers do have season hitting records. They are now considered Forever Nuggets in Phillies history. The names won’t be in the same echelon as Mike Schmidt, Ryan Howard, Chuck Klein or other Phillies sluggers.

Highest Batting Average 
Six had seasons in which they hit .300 (minimum 40 at-bats). Mostly unfamiliar names. Oddly, only one was a right-handed batter.

.322 (1923) . . . Phil “Lefty” Weinert . . . B-L, T-L . . . Philadelphia native who made Phillies debut at age 17 in 1919. Six seasons with Phils (1919-24), two with Cubs (1927-28) and one, Yankees (1931). 18-33 career record.

.316 (1946) . . . Oscar Judd . . . B-L, T-L . . . Phillies (1945-48).

.314 (1922) . . . Lee Meadows . . . B-L, T-R . . . Phillies (1919-23). First player in modern era to wear glasses. 

.310 (1900) . . .  Al Orth . . . B-L, T-R … Phillies (1895-1901). 

.310 (1990) . . . Dennis Cook . . . B-L, T-L . . . Phillies (1989-90). Traded to Dodgers that September. Hit .286 in LA.

.309 (1957) . . . Harvey Haddix . . . B-L, T-L . . . Phillies (1956-57).

.300 (1943) . . . Lynwood (Schoolboy) Rowe . . . B-R, T-R . . . Phillies (1943; 1946-49). Served in the Navy during WW II (1944-45). Spent 15 years in Majors, batted .263 in 909 at-bats.  As a pinch-hitter, .277 (28-101).
