Right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey, who was claimed on waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, reported to the club today.  To make room for Covey on the 26-man roster, right-hander Andrew Bellatti was optioned to Lehigh Valley following last night’s game.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Covey, 31, appeared in one game for Los Angeles this season and pitched 4.0 innings in relief on May 17 against the Minnesota Twins in a 7-3 Dodgers win.

A native of Glendale, Calif., Covey was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft and was later selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft.  From 2021-22, he pitched for Rakuten in the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan.

Of the 290 active pitchers in Major League Baseball that have faced at least 1,000 batters in their respective careers, Covey’s 50.5 percent ground ball rate ranks 41^st.

A veteran of 72 major league games (45 starts) over parts of five seasons, Covey has pitched for the White Sox (2017-19), Boston Red Sox (2020) and Dodgers (2023).  Covey, pronounced COH-vee, will wear No. 54.

Bellatti, 31, has made 15 relief appearances for the Phillies this season, 10 of which were scoreless.  He posted a 5.68 ERA (8 ER, 12.2 IP) with 14 strikeouts against nine walks.  Per Statcast, he ranks in the 94^th percentile in fastball spin, the 93^rd percentile in barrel rate and the 90^th percentile in whiff percentage.

Over eight postseason appearances in 2022, Bellatti had a 1.29 ERA (1 ER, 7.0 IP) for the Phillies, which included three scoreless appearances in the World Series (3.0 IP).

Bellatti was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12^th round of the 2009 MLB Draft and was signed by the Phillies as a minor league free agent on Nov. 19, 2021.
