Darrell Conner selected as 2021 Dallas Green Award winner

September 17th, 2021

Phillies National Scouting Coordinator Darrell Conner has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Dallas Green Award, the club announced today.

Connor was hired by the Phillies in December 1999 as an area scout, climbing to the title of west coast regional supervisor in the fall of 2008 and eventually to his current position prior to the 2019 season. Conner was the signing scout of 2002 first-round selection Cole Hamels, who would spend 10 seasons with the Phillies, leading them to the 2008 World Series championship as NLCS and World Series MVP and making three All-Star teams. As west coast regional supervisor, he was instrumental in drafting Rhys Hoskins, Luke Williams, Bailey Falter, JoJo Romero and Scott Kingery, along with former Phillies J.P. Crawford, Ken Giles, Tyler Gilbert and Aaron Altherr, among others. In his current role, Conner has played a major part in the drafting of the club’s three most-recent first-round selections: Bryson Stott (2019), Mick Abel (2020) and Andrew Painter (2021).

“When I got the call, I was pretty emotional,” Conner said. “I’m a lifer here. I’ve been here with one club since day one and I’m not only honored, but humbled by the recognition. The name for whom this award is given has such a high standard attached to it. The name Dallas Green resonates loudly with not just Philadelphia baseball, but baseball everywhere. I am truly overwhelmed and couldn’t be happier to share it with my fellow scouts, family and friends.”

The 2021 Dallas Green Award will be presented on the field on Monday, Sept. 20, prior to the 7:05 p.m. game against the Baltimore Orioles. The award was established in 2011 to honor the accomplishments of Green, who spent 62 years in professional baseball, 46 of which were with the Phillies. Green passed away in March 2017 at the age of 82.

The award is presented annually to an amateur or professional scout who best exemplifies the Phillies’ standard for scouting while demonstrating the same loyalty, work ethic, dedication and passion as the award’s namesake. It is also recognition of the scout’s ability to judge not only a player’s talent, but also his character and heart.

“Darrell is a lifelong Phillies scout who has given his heart and soul to this club,” said Brian Barber, Phillies director of amateur scouting. “While working his way up from an area scout, to regional supervisor, to now having an integral leadership role as a national coordinator, Darrell has worked tirelessly to help find talent for the Phillies organization while demonstrating loyalty and passion that is infectious to all around him. Darrell embodies all of what the Dallas Green Award is about, and we are lucky to have him.”

Past winners of the Dallas Green Award have been Dick Lawlor (2011), Bill Harper (2012), Eddie Bockman (2013), Gordon Lakey (2014), Sal Agostinelli (2015), Roy Tanner (2016), Joey Davis (2017),

Jesús “Chalao” Méndez (2018) and Mike Stauffer (2019). The award was not given in 2020.
