BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock from the 15-Day Injured List. To make room for Whitlock on the active roster, the club optioned left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Whitlock, 26, will start today’s game against the Diamondbacks. The right-hander allowed one run in 8.2 innings over two rehab appearances with Worcester, most recently tossing 4.2 scoreless innings in Game One of Sunday’s doubleheader against Lehigh Valley. Whitlock is 1-2 with a 6.19 ERA (11 ER/16.0 IP) in three Major League starts this season. Selected by Boston in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft, he is 13-8 with a 3.06 ERA (57 ER/167.2 IP) in 80 career appearances (12 starts) with the Red Sox (2021-23).

Bernardino, 31, pitched a scoreless ninth inning last night. The left-hander has made 12 appearances for Boston since being claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on April 16, posting a 3.38 ERA (5 ER/13.1 IP) with 11 strikeouts and four walks. He has also made two relief appearances with Worcester, allowing one run in 3.0 innings.
