Red Sox to celebrate AAPI Heritage in pregame ceremonies at Fenway Park tonight

May 3rd, 2023

BOSTON, MA – The Red Sox will mark the start of Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage month today, Wednesday, May 3, in pregame ceremonies and fan entertainment celebrating AAPI culture prior to tonight’s 7:10 p.m. game at Fenway Park against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Pregame ceremonies will include a special presentation of the World Baseball Classic All-Tournament Team Trophy to Masataka Yoshida and Yu Chang in recognition of their World Baseball Classic performance for their respective countries.

The ceremonies will also recognize Quincy Asian Resources, Inc. (QARI), and Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, two local nonprofits that support and empower Asian and immigrant communities. Tonight’s National Anthem will be performed by local musical artist and Berklee College of Music graduate Ava Sophia. The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Olivia Pichardo, a utility player for Brown University’s baseball team, and the first woman to play in an NCAA Division I baseball game.

Additional cultural entertainment includes Chinese dragon and lion dances, as well as Japanese Taiko drumming and K-Pop dance performances on Jersey Street. Boston Bhangra will perform a traditional Bhangra dance, and MIT student Kanoe Evile of Hawaii will lead a Hula and Polynesian dance and musical performance in the Big Concourse. Asian-inspired concession items including chicken potstickers, sweet & sour meatballs, and Pani Popo, a Samoan Coconut Sweet Roll, will also be available on Jersey Street.

Tickets for tonight’s game are available by visiting redsox.com/aapiheritage and include a custom Red Sox AAPI Celebration hat that features the translation of “Boston” in many AAPI languages on the underbrim. Mastercard is the preferred payment method of the Boston Red Sox. AAPI Heritage night is part of several Cultural and Identity nights hosted at Fenway Park throughout the season to help support the club’s ongoing effort to make the ballpark an inclusive and welcoming environment for all fans.
