CarGo misses opener, but plans to play through pain

SAN DIEGO -- Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez sat out Monday night's game with the Padres after spraining his middle finger Sunday against the D-backs.

Gonzalez, the National League leader with 24 home runs, said he doesn't know when he'll return, but he knows he'll still be hurting when he does.

"I know that I'm going to have a little soreness for a little while, but I want to get to the point where I can play through it," Gonzalez said. "I don't feel good enough to play, but I'm not waiting to feel 100 percent. I want to feel good enough to go out and play for my team."

It is the second time in less than a week that Gonzalez has been injured. He suffered a back strain and missed Friday's game in Arizona. Sunday's injury occurred when he struck out in the sixth inning on a slider from D-backs lefty Patrick Corbin.

"I was walking back to the outfield and I knew that I hurt myself a little bit, then it got worse," said Gonzalez, who left the game in the ninth after fouling off a pitch from reliever Josh Collmenter.

To cover themselves in an outfield already depleted by the absence of regular center fielder Dexter Fowler, who began what figures to be a brief injury rehab assignment on Monday, the Rockies recalled outfielder Charlie Blackmon from Triple-A Colorado Springs. The Rockies made the move because they had to place right-hander Roy Oswalt on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.
