Top prospect Montgomery belts first Triple-A dinger

April 13th, 2024

Colson Montgomery, the No. 1 White Sox prospect and No. 9 overall, according to MLB Pipeline, launched his first home run for Triple-A Charlotte during a 7-5 loss at Jacksonville Friday.

The shortstop connected on the first pitch he saw in the eighth inning from Declan Cronin, who was a reliever for the 2023 White Sox, and drove it out to right as one of his two hits on the night. Prior to an 11-1 loss to the Reds at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday, White Sox general manager Chris Getz spoke on Montgomery’s first full season in the International League.

“Yeah, Colson is deserving to be at Charlotte after what he did in Double-A and in the Arizona Fall League. He’s shown that that is the right decision so far,” Getz said. “Colson’s doing really well.

“Defensively he’s making some really good plays. That's been a high priority for the organization. His at-bats have been pretty solid. He’s showing up every day and really becoming the overall professional we had hoped, and really looking forward to watching his progress unfold there in Charlotte.”

While the White Sox had another rough night at the Major League level, the future looked pretty good in the present on the Minor League side. Catcher Edgar Quero, the No. 5 White Sox prospect, homered twice for Double-A Birmingham and drove in five. Shortstop Jacob Gonzalez, the team’s top pick in the ‘23 Draft and No. 7 prospect, went deep during a 2-0 victory for High-A Winston-Salem.

Montgomery has a slash line of .260/.327/.360 this season, but after battling through oblique and back issues in ‘23, the White Sox are happy to have him playing.

“Regardless of where he was starting, from an assignment standpoint, it's more starting the season healthy and getting a complete season in, which he hasn't done yet,” Getz said. “It just so happens to be at Charlotte.

“He's off and running and playing on a regular basis. I still believe he’ll let us know when he is ready and we won't be scared to bring him up when he is ready.”
