CHICAGO -- Dylan Covey will be going to Triple-A Charlotte for what White Sox manager Rick Renteria and the right-handed hurler termed a reset.

Covey was optioned to Charlotte following Sunday’s 11-1 loss to the Twins, after Covey faced five hitters, allowed five hits, two home runs and five runs without recording an out over 14 pitches. Since the All-Star break, Covey has allowed 18 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings in five appearances and lasted less than one inning in two of his past three starts (he was removed after two-thirds of an inning against Oakland on July 13).

“Just not hitting my spots, not throwing with conviction. That's about it,” Covey said. “Trying to go out there and compete, knowing I have all the stuff in the world, and just mentally out there, I think I'm trying to do too much. Trying to think too much about the game. Since I got activated, it's been a rough go for me.”

“[We'll] get him back there, see if we can get him back on track and go from there,” White Sox manager Rick Renteria said.

Renteria had no replacement plan for the fifth starter spot. Ross Detwiler could move from the bullpen to the rotation. Hector Santiago and Kyle Kubat also could be options from Charlotte, although neither is on the 40-man roster. Covey threw the ball well during his injury rehab assignment with Charlotte, recovering from right shoulder inflammation that put him on the injured list retroactive to June 6. But the success did not follow to the Majors.

“I didn't really pick up with that same momentum that I had,” Covey said. “[I'm] disappointed in myself, disappointed obviously, but a reset is a good word for it. I believe I'll be back. I have the stuff to be here. I just need to get everything clicking on all cylinders.”

A corresponding move will be made by the White Sox prior to Tuesday’s series opener with the Mets.
