Burger goes deep in 3 straight games for the 3rd time in 2023

July 29th, 2023

CHICAGO -- has hit home runs this season.

Twenty-five of them, to be exact. Seventeen have been at home and four have been in his last three games, which marks his third stretch of going deep in three straight games -- something no other Major League player has accomplished in 2023.

But his sixth-inning connection off Cleveland’s Daniel Norris during a 3-0 victory Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field featured a little extra relish.

That drive carried a projected 450 feet, according to Statcast, and landed in the second tier of center field shrubbery.

“I’ve seen Luis Robert go up there a few times but I can’t match that to dead center,” Burger said. “I can play with him on the pull side but not to dead center.”

“It seems like every time we make a mistake to Burger, we see him wearing that sport coat over there,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. “If you leave something out over the plate, he's hitting it.”

Friday’s performance ended a six-game losing streak for the White Sox (42-63) in their fifth shutout of the season. To say it’s a new-look team would be a bit of a misnomer, even with Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo López, Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly and Kendall Graveman traded since Wednesday.

Players such as Burger and Robert, who hit his team-best 29th homer, have been in the lineup for much of this 2023 season. But there are new opportunities.

Touki Toussaint, who will be part of the rotation for the rest of ‘23 and probably into ‘24, earned his first victory with the White Sox by striking out four over five scoreless innings. Tanner Banks followed with three scoreless and Gregory Santos (second save) pitched the ninth. Santos now is the White Sox closer, at least until Liam Hendriks returns from the injured list.

“I’m going to give that a shot. I think he’s got the makings of it, the characteristics of being a good closer,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “I want to put him under the fire. I’m a believer in two things: No. 1, top of the lineup in the eighth inning you want your best guy out there. But I’m also a believer in the ninth inning, those are three different outs.”

A chance to show leadership also is available to these remaining charges, as the White Sox embark on a roster change after two subpar seasons. Burger smiled and said he will let his peers decide who is a leader, but if hard work on a daily basis means anything, add Burger into the mix.

Hitting long home runs on a consistent basis doesn’t hurt his cause either.

“He's very aggressive. He knows what pitches he likes to hit and he's good at hitting mistake pitches,” Cleveland opener Xzavion Curry said. “I would say the time that you do slip up and make the mistake pitch, he does make you pay. He usually squares those balls up. That's what makes him a tough out."

“You can already tell who wants to be in that leadership spot and role,” Burger said of the team. “It’s just building off of that. Aside from leadership, it’s just building a really good culture and going from there.”
