Hunter Dorraugh entered Sunday's Mountain West Tournament Championship Game without a multihomer game across five seasons in college baseball.

The redshirt junior changed that in a hurry as he flexed his power in San Jose State's biggest game of the season with a school-record four home runs -- even as his Spartans fell to Fresno State, 16-11.

Dorraugh was already San Jose State's career home run leader with 38 heading into the game, but the first baseman quickly rewrote the record books.

After fouling off the first two pitches he saw in the first inning, Dorraugh laid into a belt-high fastball for a solo homer to left, tying the Spartans' single-season mark of 15 he reached in 2021. Following a double in the second, he added another solo shot in the fourth on an outside pitch.

By the time the California native hit again, Fresno State had built a 16-3 lead, but Dorraugh did his best to cut that gap. He hammered a grand slam to center field in the sixth and added his third solo shot in the eighth.

In all, Dorraugh set or tied personal bests in hits (five), homers (four), RBIs (seven), runs (four) and total bases (18).

To do so in a loss is certainly rare. Of the 16 four-homer games in Division I since the NCAA started tracking single-game statistics, this was the first that came in a loss for the slugger's team. Additionally, there are 18 four-homer games in MLB history, and only one (Bob Horner, 1986 Braves) came in a losing effort.

This season has been a banner year for four-homer games in college baseball. Georgia Tech freshman Drew Burress was the first D-I player of the season to do so on Feb. 28 and Oklahoma State sophomore Nolan Schubart followed suit on April 30. Campbell's Henry Rochelle (five on March 30, 1985) and Florida State's Marshall McDougal (six on May 9, 1999) are the only D1 players to go deep more in a single game.

The Spartans' loss will likely be their last game of the season, as they fell a few runs shy of an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and hold a losing record (24-33) on the season. But Dorraugh ended his redshirt junior campaign in noisy memorable fashion.
