White Sox acquire outfielder Adam Eaton from Arizona

The Chicago White Sox have acquired outfielder Adam Eaton from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for left-handed pitcher Hector Santiago and a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Diamondbacks then traded Santiago and left-hander Tyler Skaggs to the Los Angeles Angels in return for outfielder Mark Trumbo and a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Eaton, 25, hit .252 (63-250) with 10 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 22 RBI over 66 games with Arizona in 2013 after missing most of the first half of the season with a sprained ligament in his left elbow. He appeared in 35 games in left field, 40 in center and four in right. The 5-foot-8, 185-pound Eaton also played in a combined 26 games between Class AAA Reno, Class A Visalia and the Arizona League Diamondbacks last season, batting .256 (23-90) with two home runs and 13 RBI.

"Adam provides us with a smart, high-energy baseball player for the top of the lineup," said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. "He knows the strike zone, is disruptive on the bases and provides solid defense in center field."

The Springfield, Ohio native entered the 2013 season ranked by Baseball America as the No. 3 Prospect, Best Hitter for Average, Fastest Baserunner and Best Outfield Arm in the Arizona organization.

Eaton, who bats and throws left-handed, was named Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player and the Diamondbacks Minor League Player of the Year in 2012 after combining to hit .375 (198-528) with 47 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 48 RBI, 130 runs scored, 44 stolen bases and a .456 on-base percentage in 130 games between Reno and Class AA Mobile. He led all full-season minor leaguers in average, doubles, runs scored and hits and ranked second in on-base percentage.

Eaton is a career .348 (453-1,300) hitter with 88 doubles, 26 home runs, 165 RBI, 281 runs scored, 106 stolen bases and a .450 on-base percentage in 345 games over four minor-league seasons and a .254 (85-335) hitter with five home runs, 27 RBI and 59 runs scored in two seasons with Arizona. He was selected by the Diamondbacks in the 19th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Miami (Ohio) University.

Santiago, 25, went 4-9 with a 3.56 ERA (59 ER/149.0 IP) and 137 strikeouts in 34 games (23 starts) in 2013, his first full season with the White Sox. He was 8-10 with a 3.41 ERA (85 ER/224.2 IP) and 218 strikeouts in 78 games (27 starts) over parts of three seasons with the Sox from 2011-13 after being selected in the 30th round of the 2006 draft.
