White Sox purchase the contract of Taylor Thompson

Transfer Felipe Paulino to the 60-day disabled list

Prior to today's game vs. Houston, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Taylor Thompson from Class AAA Charlotte and transferred right-hander Felipe Paulino to the 60-day disabled list. Thompson takes the roster spot of infielder Carlos Sanchez, who was optioned to Charlotte following last night's game.

Thompson, 27, is 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA (14 ER/48.1 IP), six saves (six opportunities), 53 strikeouts and a .214 opponents average (39-182) over 31 relief appearances with Charlotte this season. He owns a 9.87 strikeout per 9.0 IP mark.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Thompson has recorded at least one strikeout 27 times while 24 of his outings have been scoreless. He is limiting right-handers to a .185 average (17-92) and lefties to a .244 mark (22-90). Thompson has not allowed a home run over his last 21 appearances.  

Thompson, who will be making his major-league debut and wear uniform No. 60, originally was selected in the 44th round of the June 2009 draft. He has gone 17-8 with a 2.65 ERA (79 ER/268.1 IP), 54 saves and 282 strikeouts in 181 games (three starts) over six seasons in the White Sox organization. Thompson recorded double digits in saves in three consecutive seasons from 2011-13, including 13 last season and a career-high 15 in 2011.

Paulino, 30, has been on the disabled list since April 19 with right rotator cuff inflammation. He is 0-2 with an 11.29 ERA (23 ER/18.1 IP) over four starts with the White Sox this season.

Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.
