TAMPA, Fla. – George Lombard Jr.'s time as a big leaguer is still on the horizon, but flashes of his immense potential were on full display during Grapefruit League play prior to his reassignment to Minor League camp.
MLB's No. 32 prospect collected three extra-base hits, six walks and six RBIs across 33 plate appearances for the Yankees this spring. This week, Lombard will headline New York's contingent in the third Spring Breakout showcase.
“I’m refining my approach with every at-bat,” he said recently. “I think the most important part is just competing, having competitive at-bats and not giving any free ones away.”

The 20-year-old infielder also flashed some strong defense, primarily at shortstop, a carryover from a 2025 Minor League campaign in which he committed just nine errors across 111 games.

How can I tune in?
Notable position players
The Yankees' top prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, Lombard has already flashed his penchant for making sharp defensive plays at three infield positions (shortstop, third base, second base) in Grapefruit League action this spring. Lombard turns 21 in June, and the Yankees believe he could already excel defensively in the Majors, but they're content to give his bat more time to develop.
Kaeden Kent, son of 2026 Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Kent, will be entering his first full season of pro ball. The club's third-round pick in last year's Draft starred at Texas A&M before beginning his pro career at High-A Hudson Valley. Although the 22-year-old struggled offensively in a short 25-game stint, the Yankees are excited to see what their No. 13 prospect can do now that he's gotten his feet wet.
Notable pitchers
Fans are likely to get a close look during the showcase at a pair of young hurlers New York is high on. Pico Kohn was selected in the fourth round last year out of Mississippi State and will be making his pro debut in 2026. The organization's No. 10 prospect features a 91-95 mph fastball and a sweeping slider. Kohn comes at hitters with a low three-quarters arm slot that makes his pitches hard to pick up.
Another southpaw, Kyle Carr, enjoyed a strong first full-season campaign across two Minor League levels in 2025. The Yankees' No. 11 prospect held opposing batters to a .199 average and posted a 2.64 ERA across 25 starts between High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset.
Roster details
Spring Breakout rosters were constructed in two phases in 2026. Clubs initially submitted a preliminary 40-man player pool on Thursday, March 5, which was then pared down to the official 23-27 man rosters on March 18. The rosters were assembled using MLB Pipeline's Top 30 Prospects lists plus additional prospects submitted by the club.
