Verlander, Scherzer named May's top pitchers

Two of the game's best starters continued their dominance in May as Astros pitcher took home American League Pitcher of the Month honors and Nationals Max Scherzer earned NL honors.
Verlander, 35, guided the MLB's best rotation with a 0.86 ERA in six May starts. He allowed just five runs (four earned) over 41 2/3 innings and held opponents to a .153 batting average. Verlander also struck out 50 batters and issued seven walks. He leads the MLB with a 1.11 ERA this season.
Verlander has won six Pitcher of the Month awards. This is his first time winning the award since he was a pitcher with the Tigers in 2016.

Scherzer, 33, was just as good in May. The veteran right-hander posted a 4-0 record with a 2.21 ERA in the month. He allowed 10 runs and held opponents to a .176 batting average in six starts.
Scherzer's best start came on May 30 came against the Orioles. He went eight innings and struck out 12 batters. He also didn't allow a run as he finished the game with an economical 111 pitches (83 strikes).
This is the second straight NL Pitcher of the Month award for Scherzer. He also took home NL Player of the Week honors in April. This season, he leads all MLB pitchers in wins. He is 9-1 with a 1.92 ERA.
