Giants-Braves rainout gives Harris, Sale additional rest

ATLANTA -- As the great baseball film “Bull Durham” reminded us, there are some optimal times for a rainout.

Such might be the case for the reeling Braves, whose Thursday night series finale against the Giants at Truist Park was postponed because of incoming inclement weather. The game will be played on Aug. 31, which had been an off-day for both clubs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET.

With a pair of setbacks to begin the series against San Francisco, the Braves have now lost six of seven games. They have missed the injured Ronald Acuña Jr.’s presence throughout this stretch, and a bad back has limited Michael Harris II to just one inning over the past two games.

While Acuña may not return for another few weeks, this postponement might limit the amount of time Harris is out of the lineup. The 2022 NL Rookie of the Year said his back was feeling better than expected on Wednesday. So, there’s at least a chance Harris plays during this weekend’s series against the Brewers.

Speaking of Milwaukee, the Braves will get a look at phenom Jacob Misiorowski’s rocket arm in Friday’s series opener. He will be opposed by Martín Pérez, who had been scheduled to start Thursday against the Giants.

Chris Sale will get an additional day of rest, as he’s now slated to start Saturday. Bryce Elder will start Sunday’s series finale against the Brewers.

All tickets from Thursday’s postponed game will be valid for the rescheduled game on Aug. 31.
