Adding to their already-deep outfield, the Nationals claimed Joey Wiemer off waivers from the Giants on Monday.
The 26-year-old Wiemer joins James Wood, Dylan Crews, Daylen Lile, Jacob Young, Robert Hassell III and Christian Franklin (No. 13 prospect) on the 40-man roster, which now stands at 40.
Wiemer has appeared in 180 games over the past three seasons with the Brewers, Reds and Marlins. For his career, Wiemer has a .205/.279/.359 slash line with 21 doubles, 16 home runs, 54 RBIs, 57 runs scored, 40 walks and 12 stolen bases.
Last year, he hit .236 with a .715 OPS in 27 games with Miami, who traded him to the Giants in November for cash considerations.
Wiemer saw the majority of his big league playing time in 2023 when he debuted with Milwaukee. He appeared in 132 games and belted 13 homers as a rookie.
Defensively, Wiemer has played all three outfield positions, with the most innings in center field. He has recorded seven outs above average (OAA) in nearly 1,250 frames.
His fielding run value (12) ranks 13th among National League outfielders since the start of the 2023 season (minimum 1,000 innings).
The oldest of the Nationals’ outfielders, Wiemer has the third-most service time: Young (2.037 years), Wood (1.091), Wiemer (1.089), Lile (0.129), Hassell (0.085) and Franklin (has not debuted). Nats No. 29 prospect Andrew Pinckney will also contend for big league time in the outfield this season.
Wiemer was a fourth-round pick by the Brewers in the 2020 Draft out of the University of Cincinnati.
