Rangers starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery tossed three scoreless innings in his fourth rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday night.
The veteran left-hander is on his way back from his second Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in March 2025.
Montgomery looked sharp on Tuesday, scattering five hits and recording three strikeouts without issuing a walk. He threw 40 pitches (26 strikes) while mixing in five pitches and averaging 90.7 mph with his sinker. He averaged 93.3 mph on the pitch in 2023, his last fully healthy season.
"He went three innings, gave up five hits, I think, with a couple punchouts,” Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said on Wednesday. “He pitched in a couple leverage spots, which is also good to see him get through. He gave up a leadoff double in the first inning and got through it. I watched the whole start, it looked really good. The curveball was good, changeup was good. He's trending in the right direction, just keep building him. We'll cross that bridge after the break on what the rest looks like.”
Montgomery could potentially make one more start before the break -- on Sunday with four days’ rest -- but the Rangers want to make sure everything checks out physically before deciding.
The 33-year-old last appeared in the Majors with the D-backs in 2024, when he pitched to a 6.23 ERA across 25 appearances (21 starts) in 117 innings. His last appearance for the Rangers came in Game 2 of the 2023 World Series.
The Rangers signed Montgomery to a one-year deal in Spring Training in hopes that he would fortify their rotation in the second half of the season. It may very well play out that way, especially with the absence of right-hander Jack Leiter, who underwent right ankle surgery on June 23. Leiter is progressing well -- perhaps quicker than expected -- but is not expected back with the big league club until at least late August. The club maintains that it expects him to return before the end of the season.
Montgomery owns a 4.03 ERA in parts of eight Major League seasons with four clubs, though he was at his best in 2023, when he posted a 3.20 ERA with the Cardinals and Rangers.
