MILWAUKEE -- Christian Yelich tied the Brewers’ record for home runs in an opening month when he belted No. 11 in the first inning of Friday's 5-3 loss to the Dodgers, and he has plenty of time to set a new mark. The Brewers have 10 more games on the schedule before the calendar flips to May.

It has been a record-setting few days for Yelich, who broke Prince Fielder’s franchise mark for March/April RBIs when he homered in the ninth inning for the Brewers’ only run in Thursday’s loss to the Dodgers before matching Eric Thames' club record for March/April home runs with a two-run shot in his first at-bat Friday against L.A. right-hander Ross Stripling.

Thames set that standard two years ago in his debut season with the Brewers. Now Yelich has plenty of chances ahead to break it.

"MVP and 11 homers for a reason,” said Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling, whose reaction got the GIF treatment and circulated on social media after Yelich circled the bases.

Home run No. 11 broke a tie with the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger for the NL lead in long balls. It gave Yelich 29 RBIs for the season.

The Brewers’ record for home runs in a month belongs to Fielder, who hit 13 in May 2007. Four other players had 12-homer months: Gorman Thomas (August 1979), Greg Vaughn (June 1996), Jeromy Burnitz (June 1999) and Richie Sexson (September/October 2001).

The homer, which gave Milwaukee a 2-0 lead, was Yelich's sixth in the past five games and came one batter after leadoff hitter Lorenzo Cain singled for his 1,000th career hit.

But it was otherwise another quiet night for the Brewers' offense. When Thames hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, it snapped a streak that spanned parts of four games of 11 consecutive RBIs from either Yelich or a Brewers pitcher.

“It’s a couple of days where we haven’t put a bunch of runs on the board,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “That’s going to happen. I think we’ve faced some pretty good pitching, and we’ve got a couple of guys that aren’t quite ‘on it.’ But we’re going to be fine offensively. We’re going to score a bunch of runs. I’m confident in that. This is a good baseball team [the Dodgers] with good pitching and a good offense. You have to do a lot of things well to beat them.”
