SAN DIEGO -- Brewers catcher made a leap forward in All-Star balloting results released Monday.

Grandal jumped from fifth to third among National League catchers, with 513,412 votes. He’s well behind the Cubs’ Willson Contreras (1,555,490) and the Braves’ Brian McCann (725,484), but getting into the top three is significant. The top three at each position -- top nine outfielders -- move on to the next round of voting and remain eligible to be an All-Star starter.

“He’s worthy,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “The season he’s having, he’s a worthy All-Star.”

Counting only statistics accumulated while playing catcher, Grandal entered the week leading NL backstops in home runs (15), RBIs (40), walks (38) and slugging (.545). The switch-hitter was a close No. 2 behind Contreras in batting average (.282) and on-base percentage (.385).

“‘Yas’ has been incredible,” Counsell said. “There’s just so few catchers who can do what he’s been doing offensively. Hitting from both sides of the plate, he provides matchup problems for the other team. His on-base skills, in addition to the power, is just unseen in catchers, really.

“When you can have that, he’s a separator offensively.”

The reigning NL Most Valuable Player, Christian Yelich, is one of two Major Leaguers with more than 2 million votes. Yelich, who entered Monday leading the NL in home runs (26), slugging (.746), stolen bases (16) and OPS (1.189), trails only the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger in outfield balloting. Bellinger leads all players with 2,184,251 votes, and Yelich has 2,065,382.

Mike Moustakas is pushing Ozzie Albies at second base. Albies leads with 1,011,132 votes, and Moustakas has 966,391. Moustakas is batting .280 with 21 home runs and 15 doubles.

Jesus Aguilar is eighth at first base with 188,332 votes. Orlando Arcia is seventh at shortstop with 233,953 votes. Travis Shaw is eighth at third base with 148,322 votes. Lorenzo Cain is 14th in the outfield with 282,069 votes, and Ryan Braun is 19th with 221,172 votes.
