D-backs Stat of the Day: August 2021

September 1st, 2021

MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the D-backs this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.

Aug. 31: Padres 3, D-backs 0 – Some good company
Zac Gallen made his 45th career start and his 38th with the D-backs. Through the 38 starts in an Arizona uniform he has a 3.48 ERA, which ranks ninth in club history for ERA after 38 starts. He trails Randy Johnson, Dan Haren, Brandon Webb, Daniel Hudson, Omar Daal, Curt Schilling, Patrick Corbin and Wade Miley.

Aug. 30: Padres 7, D-backs 5 -- Grand salami time
Ketel Marte's grand slam in the seventh inning Monday night pulled the D-backs to within 6-5 in their eventual loss to the Padres at Chase Field. It was the first grand slam hit by a D-backs player in the seventh inning or later of a game since Christian Walker hit one on Sept. 28, 2019, also against the Padres.

Aug. 29: Phillies 7, D-backs 4 -- McCarthy's big day
Jake McCarthy not only picked up his first career hit with a second-inning RBI double, but he also threw out Bryce Harper at the plate to complete an inning-ending double play in the seventh. The outfield assist came in McCarthy's first start in right field, as his debut Friday came in center field. The D-backs entered Sunday with just 10 outfield assists this season, tied for the fewest in MLB.

A native of Scranton, Pa., McCarthy's big day came in front of numerous friends and family members -- many of whom had an adventurous week of their own just to watch him play. The 24-year-old outfielder's entire immediate family was in attendance this weekend at Citizens Bank Park, including his grandmother, who had not seen him play baseball in "four to five years."

"It's just a super special moment for me," McCarthy said. "I got to talk to her before the game a little bit, and it's stuff like that I'll remember for the rest of my life."

Aug. 28: Phillies 7, D-backs 0 -- Coming up empty
The D-backs managed only four hits en route to being shut out for the 13th time this season. Only the Rockies (15 times) have been held scoreless more often in 2021. The 13 shutouts are also tied for the second-most in a single season in franchise history. The only club to put up a zero more frequently was the inaugural 1998 team, which was shut out 16 times in a 97-loss campaign.

Aug. 27: Phillies 7, D-backs 6 (11 innings) -- Rotation rolling
Though Taylor Widener struggled with his command at times, he battled his way through five innings while holding the Phillies to two runs on a two-run homer by Bryce Harper. Widener's outing marked the 14th consecutive game in which the D-backs' starting pitcher has completed at least five innings. Arizona starters have a 2.63 ERA over 82 innings during that stretch, while holding opposing hitters to a .205 average.

Aug. 26: D-backs 8, Phillies 7 -- Walker at home in Philly
Christian Walker matched a career high with four hits while finishing a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk against the Phillies. It marked the third four-hit game of his career -- something he also did on Aug. 21, 2020, against the Giants and April 20, 2019, vs. the Cubs. His latest four-hit effort, however, came with friends and family in attendance for a game that was played just 25 miles southeast of where the Norristown, Pa., native grew up.

Walker's four hits were part of a 15-hit night for the D-backs overall, one shy of their season high. Arizona has racked up 15 hits three times over the last two weeks, a total they had reached just twice all season prior to this stretch.

Aug. 25: D-backs 5, Pirates 2 -- Pavin's 'majestic' moonshot
D-backs manager Torey Lovullo called Pavin Smith's sixth-inning solo homer "majestic." And he was right. That home run had a launch angle of 47.5 degrees, which ranks fifth highest on a homer in MLB this season. The top four belong to: the Red Sox's Xander Bogaerts (50.1 degrees), the Astros' Carlos Correa (48.7), the Rays' Mike Zunino (48.5) and the Yankees' Joey Gallo (47.6).

Aug. 24: Pirates 4, D-backs 2 -- Rare series loss in Pittsburgh
By dropping the first two games of this three-game set, the D-backs took their first series loss in Pittsburgh since getting swept in a three-game series from May 24-26, 2016. Entering Monday's opener, Arizona had won 10 consecutive games at PNC Park, its longest win streak at an opposing ballpark in club history, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

Aug. 23: Pirates 6, D-backs 5 -- Marte keeps rolling
Outfielder Ketel Marte logged a run-scoring single in the fifth inning, giving him an RBI in four consecutive games. He has reached base safely in 12 straight games, hitting .360 (18-for-50) over that stretch.

Aug. 22: D-backs 8, Rockies 4 -- A single shy of the cycle
D-backs catcher Daulton Varsho had a big day in the win at Coors Field. Varsho doubled, tripled and homered while driving in four runs. He finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle. It's the 12th time in franchise history that a player has been just a single away from a cycle.

Aug. 21: Rockies 5, D-backs 2 -- A D-backs first at Coors Field
Zac Gallen was outstanding against the Rockies, holding them to three hits and a walk and collecting nine strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. It was the first time a D-backs starter has tossed at least seven scoreless frames at Coors Field.

Aug. 20: Rockies 9, D-backs 4 -- A rare pinch-hit triple
David Peralta's RBI triple in the sixth inning was the first pinch-hit triple for the D-backs since Sept. 14, 2018, when Jon Jay hit one in the eighth inning against the Astros. Peralta's pinch-hit three-bagger was the 13th in franchise history.

Aug. 19: D-backs 6, Phillies 2 -- D-backs' stellar homestand
The D-backs completed a three-game sweep of the Phillies to finish a 6-1 homestand, as they previously took three out of four against the Padres. It was Arizona's best record on a homestand so far this season.

Aug. 18: D-backs 4, Phillies 2 -- Hits Nos. 1 and 2 for Humberto
Humberto Castellanos had been telling D-backs manager Torey Lovullo that he was a good hitter and he got a chance to show it vs. Philadelphia, collecting the first two hits of his Major League career. Castellanos' first hit was a single to right in the second inning and his second was a single back up the middle that scored a run in the fourth.

Aug. 17: D-backs 3, Phillies 2 -- VanMeter swinging hot bat
D-backs infielder Josh VanMeter went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. It continued what has been a run of success for VanMeter at the plate. Since July 20, VanMeter is slashing .310/.375/.552 as he tries to get a leg up for playing time in 2022.

Aug. 15: Padres 8, D-backs 2 -- Gallen hits rough patch
D-backs right-hander Zac Gallen set a Major League record last year when he allowed three or fewer runs in each of his first 23 big league starts, a streak that started in 2019. This year, it hasn't been as much of a smooth ride. Gallen has allowed more than three runs in five of his 15 starts.

Aug. 14: D-backs 7, Padres 0 -- Gilbert among this fantastic four
D-backs left-hander Tyler Gilbert became the fourth player to throw a no-hitter in his first career start. Gilbert joined Bobo Holloman (1953), Bumpus Jones (1892) and Ted Breitenstein (1891).

Aug. 13: D-backs 3, Padres 2 -- Varsho on the upswing
Daulton Varsho hit a walk-off homer, and it was a continuation of his recent run at the plate. In 22 games since July 11, Varsho is has a slash line of .302/.405/.635, with three doubles, six homers and 14 RBIs.

Aug. 12: D-backs 12, Padres 3 -- Rojas' big night vs. SD
Josh Rojas went 4-for-5 with a double, three singles, two RBIs, a walk and two runs scored for the D-backs in their win over the Padres. The four hits matched a career high for Rojas, a feat he accomplished on Sept. 2, 2019, also against the Padres.

Aug 11: Giants 7, D-backs 2 -- RISP woes continue
The D-backs combined to hit just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base.

Aug 10: Giants 8, D-backs 7 -- Gallen finishes strong
Zac Gallen allowed five runs across six innings, but his final stat line was inflated by a poor first inning in which he allowed four runs. In the rest of his outing, he allowed just one run, by way of Buster Posey's solo home run.

Aug. 8: Padres 2, D-backs 0 -- D-backs' road woes continue
The D-backs lost their second straight game to the Padres to drop the series. The road has not been kind to Arizona this year. At one point, it lost a Major League-record 24 straight away from Chase Field, and it has now dropped 13 consecutive road series. The last time the D-backs won a road set was when they took two of three from the Braves in Atlanta on April 23-25.

Aug. 7: Padres 6, D-backs 2 -- Widener misses bats
Taylor Widener probably deserved better than a no-decision, as he allowed two runs over five innings in a loss to the Padres. The right-hander got 12 swings and misses, which tied for his second-most in a game in his career. His career high of 15 came on April 22 against the Reds.

Aug. 6: D-backs 8, Padres 5 -- 6-spots against Padres
The D-backs used a six-run fourth inning to rally and beat the Padres. The six-spot matched the most runs the Padres had allowed in an inning this year. The only other time it happened? On Opening Day, when the D-backs scored six times in the fifth inning.

Aug. 5: Giants 5, D-backs 4 (10) -- Ninth-inning drama
Arizona dropped the finale after being ahead 4-0 heading into the ninth. It was just the sixth time in franchise history that the D-backs gave up a lead of four or more runs in the ninth inning. Their record in those games is now 2-4.

Aug. 4: Giants 7, D-backs 1 -- Unlucky sevens
The Giants scored four runs in the seventh inning as they defeated the D-backs at Chase Field. That a team scored runs in the seventh inning against the D-backs is not a surprising development. The D-backs have allowed a combined 93 runs in the seventh inning of games this year. That is the most runs allowed in any inning by any team this season.

Aug. 3: D-backs 3, Giants 1 -- Another new face
Tyler Gilbert pitched a perfect eighth inning, striking out two, as he made his Major League debut and became the 57th player and 22nd rookie to appear for the D-backs this season, both extending franchise records. The 57 players ties the Brewers for second-most used in MLB this season, one behind the Mets, and the 22 rookies is tied with the Marlins for most in MLB.

Aug. 2: Giants 11, D-backs 8 (10) -- Marte extends streak
Ketel Marte notched two hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. It marks the sixth time in his career that he has hit in 10 or more consecutive games.

Aug. 1: Dodgers 13, D-backs 1 -- Tough times vs. LA
The D-backs have struggled mightily against the Dodgers this year. The blowout loss dropped the D-backs' record against their rival to 2-11, including a 1-4 mark at Chase Field. The Dodgers have outscored the D-backs, 97-36, over those 13 games, averaging 7.5 runs a game against Arizona.
