LOS ANGELES -- Braden Shipley's return to the Major Leagues was put on hold before it even got started.
The right-hander underwent an MRI and was diagnosed with right elbow inflammation, sending him to the 10-day disabled list Monday after receiving a cortisone injection. Right-hander Silvino Bracho was recalled in a corresponding move.
Shipley had just been recalled Saturday as a roster replacement for starter Kris Medlen, who allowed seven runs in four innings Friday against the Houston Astros.
"This just kind of jumped up on him after a throwing program on Sunday," manager Torey Lovullo said of Shipley. "He went into the training room and they saw the inflammation."
No timetable was given for Shipley's return. As for how the D-backs' rotation will line up moving forward, the club remained undecided but confident in its options.
"What this has done is that it has kind of thrown everything into a little bit of chaos when it comes to the rotation, so I don't have an announcement as to what that means," Lovullo said.
Assistant general manager Jared Porter offered a number of candidates to start against the Nationals on Saturday, the next game the D-backs have a rotation vacancy.
Right-hander Taylor Clarke, left-hander Troy Scribner and right-hander Jake Buchanan are options to start this weekend, according to Porter. He even mentioned right-hander Albert Suarez as an option.

Left-hander Clay Buchholz was scheduled to pitch Tuesday night for Triple-A Reno. He is not considered an option to be added to the D-backs' roster at the present time, Porter said.
"[Buchholz] needs to keep coming back from the [flexor tendon] injury he had and keep making progress like he has been, like he did with the Royals, and see where it leads us," Porter said.
Bracho made six appearances in relief at Triple-A Reno and had a 5.79 ERA in 9 1/3 innings. He had a 1.50 ERA in four appearances with the D-backs, including three consecutive scoreless outings against the Dodgers last week, before he was sent to Reno on Friday.
