D-backs top Rockies on walk-off HBP in 9th

After another strong start by Kelly, Arizona uses late rally to take series opener

PHOENIX -- Merrill Kelly was gone by the time the game was decided, but the right-hander proved to once again be the D-backs’ lucky charm as they beat the Rockies, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Chase Field.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the D-backs loaded the bases against Rox closer Daniel Bard. Then, David Peralta was hit by a pitch, pushing the winning run across the plate in walk-off fashion.

The D-backs have won four of their past 31 games, and each of those victories was started by Kelly, who allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Rox. Over that four-start stretch, Kelly is 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA, 18 strikeouts and two walks.

"He’s been the guy that right now we’re turning to every fifth day -- he’s been that stopper," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "That’s what we need from starting pitchers. We want them to step up and say, 'I got you. I’m going to work deep into this game, do everything I can to keep you in this game and give you a chance to win.' That’s exactly what Merrill has been doing.

"I know he gave up a couple of scratch runs, but he did exactly what we wanted him to do. He’s throwing the ball extremely well. It’s just following a game plan, executing pitches to both sides of the plate, changing speeds. He’s locked in. He's throwing the ball extremely well for us."

For Kelly, it's a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, he is happy with the way he's throwing the ball and that he's helping the D-backs win.

On the other, well, like everyone else in Arizona's clubhouse, Kelly would like there to be more wins.

"It’s cool that I’ve been a part of those four wins, but obviously, the more glaring aspect is the losses," Kelly said. "So as much as it’s a cool thing to be a part of those four wins, at the same time, at the end of the day, all I really care about is that we win. I don’t really care if I’m on the mound or somebody else is. Moving forward, I would rather see more wins, rather than just four out of 41."

Kelly had an early 3-0 lead to work with, as the D-backs opened the bottom of the first with four straight doubles against Rockies starter Jon Gray. It was the first time that Arizona had done that in franchise history and only the third time it’s happened in the Majors since 1974.

Kelly allowed a run in both the fourth and fifth, but he was gone when the Rockies tied the game at 3 in the seventh.

"It was OK," Kelly said of his performance. "Not my best. I didn’t feel great out there. I didn’t feel like the ball was coming out the way it has the last couple of games. But I was happy with the job I did based on how I felt. I was happy I was able to keep us in the game. I was happy with the results based on how I felt, that’s for sure."

Meanwhile, Gray settled in after the first, as Arizona's offense went quiet until the ninth.

The D-backs loaded the bases on a Stephen Vogt single and walks by Daulton Varsho and Josh Rojas against Bard, who hit Peralta with a pitch on the left leg to end the game.

More of a limp-off win than a walk-off one.

"The ball just hit me on my quad," Peralta said. "I couldn’t get out of the way.”

As few and far between as the wins have been for the D-backs this year, they'll take them any way they can.
