Marte (back) out of lineup; Hirano (elbow) to IL

PHOENIX -- D-backs outfielder/infielder was scratched from Saturday night’s lineup vs. the Giants with tightness in his lower back.

“He just was complaining of some sore back tightness, some fatigue on his left side,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “You hear this information, you talk to the trainers and I’ve got to be the parent in the room and take him out of the lineup and rest him up and make sure that I don’t run him into the ground. He’s played a lot of baseball games. He’s been very versatile between the infield and the outfield, and I think, at times, it just takes its toll on any body. He needs some rest. So today he’ll rest and be available off the bench. That’s my expectation right now, and then be ready to go tomorrow.”

Marte, who started at second base for the National League in the All-Star Game, has been the D-backs' best player this year, splitting time between center field and second base.

Since June 15, he leads the Majors (minimum of 125 at-bats) with a .454 on-base percentage, is second in batting average at .383 and is seventh in OPS with a 1.081 mark.

Marte has appeared in 118 of the team’s 123 games, including 114 as a starter, and is hitting .320/.381/.568.

Hirano to IL

The D-backs called up right-hander Taylor Clarke from Triple-A Reno to start Saturday night’s game and optioned right-hander Jon Duplantier back to Reno.

However, in a surprise move, the team placed reliever on the 10-day injured list with inflammation in his right elbow.

“He complained of a little bit of discomfort there [Friday] night after the game,” Lovullo said. “We had an MRI done today and everything is structurally fine and he’s going to get a [cortisone] injection at some point very soon -- I don’t know if it’s going to be today or tomorrow -- to calm everything down. So we’re not anticipating that it’s going to be a huge shutdown. It’s going to be just as short as possible.”

To replace Hirano, the team recalled right-hander Joel Payamps from Reno.

Payamps, 25, was signed by the D-backs as a Minor League free agent on Nov. 30, 2015, and has yet to pitch in a big league game. He was 5-6 with a 3.51 ERA in 14 starts between Double-A Jackson and Reno this season.

Duplantier to relief

Due to injuries, as well as having to fill a bullpen role in the big leagues, Duplantier has not gotten stretched out as a starter as much as the D-backs would like.

With that in mind, Lovullo said Duplantier will be used in relief in Triple-A.

“For right now we’re going to keep him in the bullpen,” Lovullo said. “That’s what he’s going to do in Reno and hopefully get him back up here as soon as possible.”
