Padres acquire LHP Patrick Schuster from Houston Astros as PTBN in trade for RHP Anthony Bass

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Patrick Schuster from the Houston Astros as the player to be named in yesterday's trade for right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass. The Astros complete the trade by receiving cash considerations from San Diego. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Schuster, 23, was the number one overall selection by the Astros from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in this morning's Major League Baseball's 2013 Rule 5 Draft. The left-hander went 0-1 with a 1.83 ERA (9 ER, 44.1 IP), 45 strikeouts against 18 walks and a .191 (30-for-157) opponents batting average over 55 relief appearances for High Single-A Visalia in the Diamondbacks organization this past season. Originally signed by Arizona as a 13th-round selection in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, Schuster has gone 16-14 with a 3.55 ERA (122 ER, 309.1 IP), 262 strikeouts against 129 walks and a .240 (272-for-1134) opponents batting average in 149 games, 31 starts, over parts of five minor league seasons in the Diamondbacks (2009-13) organization.

With today's transaction, the Padres currently have a full 40-man roster.
