Alonso hits DL as Maybin returns to Padres

DENVER -- The Padres made a pair of roster moves before Thursday night's series opener with the Rockies, but one of the moves wasn't anticipated.

Center fielder Cameron Maybin was activated after 45 days on the disabled list with a right wrist impingement. The corresponding move was expected to be a trip to Triple-A for Kyle Blanks, who left the team after Wednesday's 6-2 victory over the Dodgers in L.A. and spent the night at home in San Diego.

But after first baseman Yonder Alonso missed his fifth consecutive game Wednesday and wasn't progressing enough to play Thursday, the Padres elected to put Alonso on the DL with a right hand contusion, retroactive to June 1.

"It was getting better," Alonso said. "This morning I woke up and it was a lot better. Today when they were working on it, around the area was a lot better. Later on when they started touching the part where it was really sore and hurting it just got worse and worse."

Alonso had a CT scan Thursday, but the results were not immediately available.

"We thought this might happen," manager Bud Black said. "We didn't know exactly how Yonder was going to come out of the last couple of days. So we decided to make sure that when he came back he was totally healthy. Cam's back. Kyle's available, and hopefully in a week to 10 days Yonder will be back on our roster, productive. "

In his fourth big league season, Alonso is hitting .284 (54-for-190) with seven doubles, six homers, and a team-high 29 RBIs in 54 games. He was heating up at the end of May, hitting .348 over his last 14 games. This marks his first career trip to the DL.

Maybin has been wrestling with right wrist issues for a couple years, and was bothered by the wrist before further injuring it in L.A. in mid-April. He was hitting .091 (3-for- 33) when he went on the DL, but had a successful rehab stint with Triple-A Tucson, hitting .323 (10-for-31) with three home runs and four RBIs in nine games.

"Rehab went well as far as leaving healthy, and it's always nice to have success," Maybin said. "I feel good enough. I'm ready to get back out with my teammates and help out where I can. After you play 150 games the year before, you always want to be on the field. I take pride in being out there. I've played hurt, but I wasn't helping anybody trying to play hurt this time."

Maybin said he would give strong consideration to having surgery to resolve the ongoing problem when the season ends, noting that he has "a lot of stuff going on" in his wrist.

"I've just got to continue to stay on top of it, be honest with myself and how I feel," Maybin said. "If I'm hurt, I can't help the team. Right now I feel good enough to help the team, and I'm excited."
