The Phillies have claimed right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.  To make room for Covey on the 40-man roster, first baseman Darick Hall was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Covey, 31, who was designated for assignment on May 18, appeared in one game for Los Angeles this season and pitched 4.0 innings in relief on May 17 against the Minnesota Twins in a 7-3 Dodgers win.

A native of Glendale, Calif., Covey was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft and was later selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft.  From 2021-22 he pitched for Rakuten in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

Of the 288 active pitchers in major league baseball that have faced at least 1,000 batters in their respective careers, Covey’s 50.5 percent ground ball rate ranks 41st.

A veteran of 72 major league games (45 starts) over parts of five seasons, Covey has pitched for the White Sox (2017-19), Boston Red Sox (2020) and Dodgers (2023).

Hall, 27, was originally placed on the 10-day injured list on April 7 (retroactive to 4/6) with a right thumb sprain.  He underwent successful right thumb ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) repair with augmentation surgery with Dr. Pedro Beredjiklian in Philadelphia on April 12.
