ST. PETERSBURG -- Alex Cobb (turf toe on right big toe) pitched two innings to Minor League hitters at Tropicana Field on Saturday. The right-hander is expected to come off the 10-day disabled list and rejoin the Rays' rotation next week.
Kevin Cash watched Cobb go through his paces from behind a screen at first base, and the Rays manager liked what he saw.
"Doesn't look like the toe is affecting him," Cash said. "It's amazing sitting where I'm sitting. He does pound that toe, drives it into the ground pretty hard. He said he felt fine with it."
Cash said Cobb would not need to make a rehab start, and that he would likely slot him back into the rotation pending what Cobb had to say about how he felt.
"He should be good to go," Cash said.
Cobb went on the 10-day DL on Aug. 8, retroactive to Aug. 6. He is 9-8 with a 3.80 ERA in 23 starts this season.
Worth noting:
Friday night, Matt Andriese (right hip stress reaction) got struck on his left ankle with a batted ball on the second pitch of his rehab start with Class A Advanced Charlotte.
"He's fine," Cash said. "He's going to pitch in five days. Unfortunate the way it happened, but that's the way it's going right now. He got built up, I think he was slated to go 75 pitches and he went two pitches. The good thing is that he's totally fine and he'll be ready to pitch in five days."
Cash said that Andriese will need to make at least two more Minor League starts before rejoining the Rays.
Andriese went on the 10-day DL on June 13 with his hip problem. On June 16, he was transferred to the 60-day DL. The right-hander is 5-1 with a 3.54 ERA in 12 starts this season.
