Notes: Fleming hits IL; Yarbrough rebound

June 26th, 2021

After moving to the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, the Rays are expected to operate with a four-man rotation.

Fleming, who was optimistic about returning soon, was moved to the IL on Saturday after he felt his calf tighten during the sixth inning of Friday night’s series opener against the Angels.

The lefty said he had been dealing with the injury for about a month and a half and added that he could have pushed through it, but the Rays and manager Kevin Cash took the precautionary route. Fleming is expected to be ready once his IL stint is up.

“We've been monitoring it a little bit,” Fleming said. “And I know Cash has been watching it closely. I think we just caught it [at] the right time. I felt good enough that I could have kept going, but when I woke up this morning, it was like, 'Something's a little off.'”

In a corresponding move, the Rays recalled reliever Louis Head from Triple-A Durham. The right-hander has posted a 3.00 ERA in nine innings for Tampa Bay this season.

Cash said the club should be fine in Fleming’s absence given it has two off-days next week.

“It's that unique situation again where we have one [on Monday], one after the two-game set [in Washington],” Cash said. “So we might be able to keep everybody in turn and still pick up some extra days from starters, which we said last time and still holds true.”

Yarbrough looking for rebound

Coming off a rough game, Ryan Yarbrough has figured out what he needs to do to bounce back on Sunday against the Angels.

Yarbrough got through two innings of relief against the Red Sox on Tuesday before he was knocked out in the third after giving up five runs. Reflecting on that outing, Yarbrough said getting away from playing his normal speed led to the short appearance.

“I think the biggest thing was not really putting myself in good situations, and then slowing the game down way too much, especially for how much I've talked in the past [about] tempo and attacking guys. ... [It] was the exact opposite of what I normally do,” he said.
