CINCINNATI -- It was bad enough for the Reds that they were routed by the Cardinals in a 13-4 loss Friday. They certainly didn’t need their best hitter to get injured too.

During the top of the sixth inning, as the Reds were trailing 11-0, third baseman Eugenio Suarez exited the game with a left thumb sprain and was replaced in the field by Kyle Farmer. X-rays on Suarez's thumb came back negative and he will be listed as day-to-day.

“He just jammed his thumb," Reds manager David Bell said. "It’s not fractured. It’s the top joint that was sprained a little bit. If it was the bottom joint, it would’ve been more serious. We’re hoping it’s just a day or two. We’ll have to see tomorrow.”

As reliever Matt Bowman was getting roughed up during a four-run inning, Tommy Edman hit a one-out RBI single to center field that had Dexter Fowler running from first to third base. When Suarez made a desperate attempt to catch center fielder Nick Senzel's wild throw, which went into the third-base camera well, Suarez's glove hand got jammed.

The error by Senzel allowed Fowler to score another run.

Suarez is batting .259 with a team-leading 33 home runs and 76 RBIs. He was 0-for-2 in Friday’s game.
