Reds third baseman Eugenio Suárez and outfielder TJ Friedl cleared waivers, a source told MLB.com's Mark Sheldon on Thursday, and they will remain with the team. The club did not confirm the news.
By placing the duo on waivers, 29 clubs had the opportunity to claim either player before the window expired.
Suárez, who returned to the Reds on a one-year, $15 million contract after spending eight seasons with Cincy earlier in his career, has struggled to the tune of a .705 OPS in 103 games. The 35-year-old has also hit 19 home runs.
Friedl, meanwhile, has had a career-worst season with a .476 OPS in 76 games -- it is the lowest OPS among the 274 hitters who have recorded at least 250 plate appearances this season. It’s a far cry from his career .725 OPS and the .742 mark he posted in 152 games last season. Friedl spent the better part of June in the Minors amidst his struggles.
